چکیده

It is well known that excitable media can sustain “fast” stable traveling pulses of excitation. In models for which analysis is tractable, the fast pulse solution is known to appear through a saddlenode bifurcation accompanied by a “slow” unstable traveling pulse. Furthermore, the uniform rest state is also a stable solution. It is generally assumed that the boundary between the basins of attractions of the rest state and fast pulse (i.e., threshold) consists of the stable manifold of the slow pulse. We use numerical experiments to explore this issue. Our results indicate that, near the saddle-node bifurcation, the stable manifold of the slow pulse does indeed act as the threshold between the rest state and fast pulse. However, further away from the saddle-node bifurcation, a global bifurcation involving the heteroclinic connections between slow and fast pulses occurs. This bifurcation gives rise to an unstable periodic solution that has been referred to as a one-dimensional spiral wave. Beyond the bifurcation point, the stable manifold of the one-dimensional spiral wave appears to act as the threshold between the rest state and fast pulse.

Global bifurcations and the appearance of a one-dimensional spiral wave in excitable media

Spiral Meandering

The complex, so called meandering, dynamics of spiral waves in excitable media is examined from the point of view of bifurcation theory. A computational bifurcation analysis is made of spiral dynamics. It is shown that spiral meandering is organized in parameter space around a codimension-two point where a Hopf bifurcation from rotating waves interacts with symmetries on the plane. A simple mod...

Control of Spiral Wave breakup by Spatiotemporal Modulation

Spiral waves are frequently observed in a large variety of excitable media, such as the Belousov– Zhabotinsky (BZ) reactions [Winfree, 1972; Ouyang & Flesselles, 1996], the catalytic surface processes [Jakubith et al., 1990], the cardiac tissue [Davidenko et al., 1992; Qu et al., 2000] and neural networks [Sbitnev, 1998]. One common feature of spiral waves is that with the variation of the envi...

Influence of nonexcitable cells on spiral breakup in two-dimensional and three-dimensional excitable media.

We study spiral wave dynamics in the presence of nonexcitable cells in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) excitable media, described by the Aliev-Panfilov model. We find that increasing the percentage of randomly distributed nonexcitable cells can prevent the breaking up of a spiral wave into a complex spatiotemporal pattern. We show that this effect is more pronounced in 2D than 3...

A ug 2 00 4 On propagation failure in 1 and 2 dimensional excitable media

We present a non-perturbative technique to study pulse dynamics in excitable media. The method is used to study propagation failure in one-dimensional and twodimensional excitable media. In one-dimensional media we describe the behaviour of pulses and wave trains near the saddle node bifurcation, where propagation fails. The generalization of our method to two dimensions captures the point wher...
